Digital conference on sustainable tourism in rural regions: challenges and perspectives

December 4, 2025, 10:00-16:00

in cooperation with the Working Group on Sustainable Tourism

Rural regions and rural tourism play an important role in the implementation of sustainable tourism. Nevertheless, many destinations continue to focus on well-known hotspots or city tourism. The promotion of tourist offers outside of the classic visitor magnets can make an important contribution to regional development and to the stabilization of living conditions.

It is crucial to link agriculture, the environment and tourism more closely. Sustainable offerings already exist – but they still offer great potential for further development. What is needed are improved structures, targeted incentives, effective coordination and greater responsiveness to the needs of guests.

The aim of the conference is to shed light on current challenges in tourism development and to show perspectives for sustainable offers in rural areas. The lectures provide selective highlights as well as practical insights and impulses on topics such as quality of life, guest expectations, current trends, product development, innovation, networking and marketing.
