Digital Conference: Sustainable Tourism Requires Mobility: An Area with Room for Improvement
March, 26 2026, 10:00-16:00
in cooperation with the Working Group on Sustainable Tourism
Tourism requires mobility. The issue of transport is of central importance to sustainable tourism. The burden imposed by vehicular traffic ranks among the most pressing—and least resolved—problems within the realm of sustainability. In many rural regions, taking a vacation without a car remains a highly arduous undertaking. The number of guests arriving via public transport—particularly in rural areas—remains negligible. Rising traffic volumes and a lack of consideration on the roads are also having an impact on tourism offerings. The consequences of vehicular traffic and high traffic density have frequently evolved into a fundamental problem for tourist regions.
To effectively influence holiday mobility, there is a need for sustainable and flexible services that meet guests' needs and are tailored specifically to them. Consequently, the imperative is to strengthen public transport, review existing services, highlight successful new approaches, analyze the necessary framework conditions (including financing), and provide recommendations for forward-looking mobility solutions in rural regions.
The objective of this specialist conference is to shed light on the current challenges regarding sustainable mobility in rural areas and—through a series of keynote presentations on various approaches to action—to showcase replicable solutions and exemplary service offerings.
